Too Much Sleep
It quickly became very evident that I was sleeping too much every day after I was called into the office for the third time for being late to work. That was the beginning of a nightmare for me that has resulted in a vast amount of research around the topic of excessive sleep. That research has led me in many different directions and caused me to investigate many causes of this uncommon phenomenon that results in a person that just sleeps a lot.
Sleeping too much can be caused by several things, one that is very common is depression. Depression can not only take away the life from a person in the sense that they don’t want to do anything but it can also create a situation where going to sleep becomes an escape from whatever is going on in their life. That escape can bring a sense of relief and by doing so encourages more sleep.
Another common cause of sleeping too much is diabetes. To be honest research indicates that people with diabetes may sleep too much or that a person that sleeps too much may be at increased risk of diabetes. It’s not clear which is the cause and which is the result but there does seem to be a correlation between the two in many people’s lives.
If you suspect that you may have a problem in this area it’s time to wake up and do something about it. From my own experience, it usually starts with people joking about the length of time that you sleep and the joking sometimes can turn to anger or bitterness. Those that are closest to you will probably be the first that lets you know you are sleeping outside the normal range for most humans. Take a good look at your habits and if you need to even keep a journal. This sort of record will be not only good to help you identify if you do have a problem but will also be helpful to your physician should you decide to seek medical help.
If you feel you could have a problem with too much sleep it would be my suggestion to first talk to your family physician, get a very thorough physical and find out what his or her recommendations are. They may offer you some sort of treatment or refer you to a specialist in whatever area that they suspect may be causing this issue. Whatever the case, it’s better that you deal with it sooner as opposed to later so that you can avoid as many problems as possible caused by the symptoms of too much sleep.
