Bad things don’t always happen to the other person, they can also happen to you. Sure, you may not have to worry about a bad flood where you live but maybe a bad winter snowstorm could make things ugly for some time. Even an earthquake can wreck havoc in an entire area knocking out services and power that can take time to get back up and running. So, you make sure you have enough flashlight batteries, toilet paper, and ammo for the gun, but what about having enough food? That canned food in the cupboard can go pretty fast if you are feeding a few people. As the grocery stores empty out and close down as they are filling up with water and snow, perhaps a little food insurance would be a good idea.
The idea of food insurance is to have an emergency supply of food for two weeks per person that you are going to need to feed. Visions of a basement full of canned food and lima beans are a thing of decades ago and there are better options available now. The answer not having to rotate out food every so often taking up a bunch of space is through the use of freeze dried food. This type of food can simply have water added to it to moisten it back up and it can also be heated for a decent meal. There are several companies out there that offer packets of food ready to go and you can even buy two week kits that are in a bucket that you can open whenever you may need them. The average shelf life for freeze dried food is about 50 years so it’s a set it and forget it type of deal.
You may never have to go through a situation where you are worried about where your next meal is coming from, but if you ever do, you’ll be glad that you invested in some food insurance.
